God Who'd Want To Be...

...such an asshole. Um, motherflipping Charles Bukowski.

I just finished reading his book 'Women' and was absolutely taken by it. It's my first Bukowski novel and I picked it up not knowing I wouldn't be able to put it down for 2 days straight. I like the review from the Washington Post on the cover; it reads, "The poet laureate of sour alleys and dark bars, of racetracks and long shots."

There's a movie about Bukowski called 'Barfly' (1987) that stars Faye Dunaway and Mickey Rourke (whom I love):

Mickey Rourke starred in The Wrestler which I saw on Valentine's Day and loved. 

He was also in a film called 'Spun' which was scored by The Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan and starred a million and a half people including Jason Schwartzmann, John Leguizamo, and Brittany Murphy. In 'Spun' Rourke played 'The Cook', a meth-brewing cowboy badass.

He was also in a film with Kiera Knightley about bounty-hunters.

It wasn't so great, but Tom Waits had a cameo appearance in this film, which made it all the better:

Aside from that, Tom Waits is a god and I shouldn't even get started on how much I'd have his babies.

This is a good movie and it reminds me of my dad. Horseback riding sounds wonderful right about now, and it definitely is the season for sleeping under the stars. 

On another note, Steve Martin used to be a fox.

Is It Just Me...

...or is this really unattractive? Blaze Starr is apparently revered as "The Hottest Blaze in Burlesque." I entirely disagree. Despite the fact that she looks clumsy and drunk, her only appeal is her figure which is not the only criteria which makes a woman sexy. Grace, poise, mystery? None are present in this routine.

However, this woman does  possess the aforementioned qualities. 

One Ms. Dita Von Teese, Burlesque artiste extraordinaire.

Dita Von Teese was actually married to Marilyn Manson. And they did a spread in Vogue together right before their wedding. I remember this because I fell in love with a picture of them (that was Dita's wedding dress).

They split up just in time for Manson to pursue his next wildly attractive woman (18 years his junior), Ms. Evan Rachel Wood.

After she started dating Manson, Evan Rachel Wood started looking a lot more like Dita and then somehow turned into an out-of-control sexpot. Anyways, I digress. 

Burlesque....is an art. And Blaze Starr can suck it. 

Don't Turn My Picture to the Wall

Of late, I've been really into Bill Boyd & His Cowboy Ramblers.

They sound like they look, which is wonderful, although every once in a while, they throw a polka track on their albums which is disconcerting. Another badass cowboy from this era is one Merle Travis, who's an excellent guitarist. We also, of course adore Django Reinhardt. 

Now, Bill Boyd is not to be confused with Bill & Boyd, a New Zealand pop sensation duo from the 60's.

They did some work with Cab Calloway, that's how I came across them. I've recently been enamored of any tap-dancing duo. So as to not disclude the greats, here's a video of Ginger and Fred. Ginger should never be allowed to wear pants, her stems are too killer.

This is a film that I remember liking when I watched it. I want to watch it again. Jeffrey what's-his-face....the 'bad guy' or one of Natalie Wood's love interests looks like Peter a bit.

Handbags and Gladrags

So Fellow Citizens are recording! It's very exciting and it's all coming along famously. There's a link to their blog on this page. And they have an mp3 up right now. Also, myspace.com/fellowcitizens.

Curt and I went to see a screening of Roman Polanski's film, Noz w wodzie, or 'Knife in the Water' from 1962. It's basically about a couple who goes sailing and invites a young drifter along for the ride. Lots of sexual tension, but it's really good.

I watched another really interesting movie with Curt more recently on cable called Straw Dogs(1971). It was directed by Sam Peckinpah (which, by the way, sounds like a made-up name) and it stars Dustin Hoffman. It's really interesting and I think it's become one of my favorite films to date for whatever reason. It's about a couple who moves to England and the people working on their house end up raping Dustin Hoffman's wife. But here's the twist: she sort of likes it. In the end there's an epic battle where Dustin Hoffman kills something like 10 men. So check it out. Also, the poster is really great:
